NEWS: NEO: The World Ends With You OFFICIAL TRAILER REVEALED

Return to the streets of Shibuya in the follow-up to the legendary Nintendo DS RPG The World Ends With You! This time, it’s a full 3D environment with new game mechanics and new characters.

Square Enix revealed the trailer for the new installment earlier today, and it introduces A LOT of new mysteries. This time you’ll play as Rindo, an “aimless, indecisive” boy who is dropped into Shibuya’s death game searching for answers. (Sounds a lot like Neku, eh?) Rindo is joined by new allies, Fret and Nagi, and a certain familiar face that’s not so zetta slow… that’s right, the integer-inducing cypher Minamimoto is back, and this time he’s a playable character!

Polygon theorizes that NEO: The World Ends With You is a prequel to the original DS game due to Minamimoto’s presence as a Player rather than a Reaper this time. In this world, Players can become Reapers in order to avoid losing the Reaper’s Game and facing erasure. If Minamimoto is still fighting to survive, then NEO may tell the story of how the original game’s plot came to pass.

There’s even a new Game Master, Shiba, new pins to discover, and radical remixes of fan-favorite rap and rock songs. A big tidbit to note is that Rindo runs into Tsugumi Matsunae, a character that was introduced in The World Ends With You: Final Remix, and he seems to recognize her from somewhere.

There’s obviously a TON about this game we don’t know yet. But this is fantastic news for fans of the franchise. Seriously, it’s taken about as long for a new installment to come out as Kingdom Hearts 3 did.

NEO: The World Ends With You is slated for release on Nintendo Switch and Playstation 4 in Summer 2021.
