Lightyear Trailer REVIEW
The space ranger that put Pixar on the map in Toy Story is getting an origin story that feels more like First Man than Buzz Lightyear of Star Command.
Lightyear stars Chris Evans, taking over the role of Buzz Lightyear from Tim Allen. The rest of the cast has yet to be announced. The film will show how Buzz became the hero of the galaxy, the untold story behind the titular Toy Story toy Andy was so excited to have gotten on his birthday.

The tone of the film feels more like a hard science fiction story, similar to films like First Man or The Martian. It’s almost like they tried to distance themselves from the tone and feel of the original Buzz Lightyear movie, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins. That film and subsequent TV show were very much interstellar adventures similar to Star Wars and Guardians of The Galaxy. In those, Buzz was already a full fledged space ranger amongst many space rangers trying to stop Zurg. I compare the Space Rangers and Star Command to Green Lanterns, with Buzz being one of the veteran members like Hal Jordan.
The trailer makes me wonder how they will introduce Buzz’s longtime nemesis Emperor Zurg. Zurg Bots do show up in the trailer, so I bet he shows up sometime in the movie too. Since the film is going with a slightly more grounded take on Buzz, the screenwriters came up with a way to introduce Zurg in a way that fits this new Buzz Lightyear world. I wonder if they will bring back Wayne Knight from the original film, that could still happen.

This is the best looking Pixar trailer I have ever seen. The detail is stunning and the world feels so real. The new world for Buzz Lightyear is so detailed, and you can tell they tried to keep the best parts of the already established lore of Buzz Lightyear in this new story too. I’m really excited to see what they do with his classic suit.
I think that this has all the makings of a really cool movie. Woody had his origin in Toy Story 2, so it’s about time that Buzz Lightyear got his turn too. This film will take us before infinity to show us what happened before the beyond. If this is a good movie then I will definitely be jealous of young Andy, because he got to see it first.
