DC’s super teen with the super suit Blue Beetle’s first movie trailer has hit the web and showcases a new story we’ve definitely seen before.

Blue Beetle will star Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle, Susan Sarandon as Victoria Kord, George Lopez as Uncle Rudy Reyes, Bruna Marquezine as Jenny Kord, and Raoul Max Trujillo as Conrad Carapax.

In the trailer we see Jaime, a teenager, gain special abilities that he will have to use to save the day. I assume he’s going to learn that with great power comes great responsibility. However, instead of getting abilities from a radioactive arachnid, he gets powers from a technologically advanced beetle shaped device. Fit with its own AI and the ability to create the solution to all of Jaime’s combat needs, Jaime and his family will have to use the beetle suit and the tech of the previous Blue Beetles to stop the evil Victoria Kord.

The movie looks like it will be a remix of superhero plot points we’ve seen many times before. We’ve seen heroes look down to earth from space, we’ve seen teens have to become heroes, and we’ve seen technologically advanced super suits.

What will keep this movie from being considered too generic will be the Reyes family. We haven’t seen a Mexican American family at the center of a superhero movie before. If Blue Beetle nails all of those characters and gives us a story with heart and fantastic action then WB will have succeeded in giving us something amazing.
Jaime’s family is featured more than when Jaime is in the suit. It’ll be fun to see them help him save the day, especially if George Lopez keeps cracking jokes about Batman. Uncle Rudy and Peacemaker should have a TedTalk about everything they dislike about the Caped Crusader.

DC always does a really good job of having their superhero suits be comic accurate. The beetle suit and the Ted Kord ship and gadgets are probably the most accurate ones yet. I really enjoyed seeing him fly around and make giant swords with the suit.

My introduction to Blue Beetle was in Batman: The Brave and the Bold and my hope is he’s as fun to watch in this movie as he was on the show. I’ll be viewing this cautiously but also optimistically. I want DC movies to be good and if it is good then I can’t wait to see how Jaime figures into James Gunn’s DCU.
